All Elite Wrestling has done an excellent job protecting the importance of its titles. The build that Darby Allin has enjoyed throughout his AEW run has helped elevate the TNT championship. This week, he stands to defend the title against Miro. The weeks leading up to this match create an opportunity to transition that title to Miro while building important storylines for both individuals’ futures.

Miro’s AEW tenure did not get off to the start that everyone expected it to, but the slow burn has helped when looking at the long-term picture. So many of the WWE names that initially jumped to AEW were feed to then-champion, Jon Moxley, just to lose and nearly be lost in the shuffle of the midcard. Miro came in and was tied into Kip Sabian’s storyline. Everyone knew that Miro would eventually turn on Sabian, squashing him in a brutal fashion. That moment happened in a backstage segment, but the angle between the two of them is far from over.

Allin has his growing troubles with Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page. Last week, they tossed him down the steps at Daily’s Place in what is being presented as an injury to Allin’s shoulder. If this is just an angle, expect that to be the story for the title defense on Wednesday. Allin is a fighting champion, but with this injury he is not well enough to defeat the surging Miro, allowing a new champion to be crowned. Allin would then be able to continue his feud with Page and Sky, looking for revenge against them for putting him in his injured state.

If this were another promotion, viewers would expect some sort of disqualification in the title match, leading to a non-finish. AEW avoids those types of shenanigans, allowing important matches to have finishes to lead to compelling angles and payoffs in the future. Allin and Miro are two individuals that can have their futures tied together with the start of everything going down this week on AEW Dynamite.

Allin may be considered AEW’s first “home-grown” talent to reach star-level status. And then there’s Miro, the former WWE competitor that was never utilized in the fashion that fans wanted. Putting these two men together in a slow build, long payoff angle would be the correct move to start another must-see angle in the promotion. This week’s title match has all the implications to be the start of something important.
