Is AEW making the right move by hiring former WWE superstars as analysts to help younger talent?

All Elite Wrestling changed the wrestling landscape when it came into being on the 1st of January in 2019. As time passed, wrestling fans became intrigued with every move the newest company made. Kenny Omega was a free agent, and the rumor mill had it that The Cleaner would sign with the wrestling juggernaut. The new Executive Vice President of AEW was ready to turn things upside down.

It didn’t take much time for the world to see something unexpected take place in front of their eyes when The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla switched bases from WWE to All Elite Wrestling. Cody Rhodes opened up about his experience with Vince and Co., and he even showcased his feelings during the first show hosted by the company.

With a new player in the business, wrestlers could try their luck in a different ring where energetic brains called the shots instead of a man who revolutionized wrestling. It’s a no-brainer that various people had grudges against WWE, and they wanted to get their moment, so this was their ultimate shining spot. Chris Jericho’s signing with the new promotion added fuel to the fire as everyone instantly got interested in the product.

It looks like WWE didn’t make the List of Jericho, but with a new face to run and captivate the place, AEW knew that they fired the right shot. As time went by, Jon Moxley, f.k.a. Dean Ambrose’s contract was up in the air, and The Lunatic Fringe made it clear that he doesn’t want to re-sign with the biggest wrestling promotion. He laid down the chips during his last interview with the WWE, and then the promos aired that set everything ablaze and the fans enthralled. Mox made his unannounced entry at the Double or Nothing event and changed the landscape of All Elite Wrestling.

AEW has since signed various WWE veterans to entice the fans but is it the right choice? While it is true that veterans have experience under their belt and can help a superstar rise to greater levels, is hiring those that can’t add more to the in-ring action the affirmative business decision? Jon Moxley is in his prime and received a considerable push in the WWE, as did the Le Champion, Chris Jericho. If these two are out of the equation, Shawn Spears, f.k.a Tye Dillinger, didn’t enjoy success in the WWE despite the fans that were interested in his brief run on the main roster. His career picked up in AEW, and he is now a member of the newest faction, Pinnacle.

‘All Elite’ as a word resonates with class, and that doesn’t mean people who are a member of a specific company’s Hall of Fame class. However, it looks like AEW is investing in people that will have little impact on the overall storyline in the company and even lesser impact on the fans. Mark Henry is in an age where he wouldn’t want to lace up his boots again, while Paul Wight wouldn’t make many contributions to the in-ring action. Sting is working on a limited schedule, and Christian is past his prime, so it seems unlikely that they will help anyone except for backstage coaching and guidance.

While it’s a good idea to invest in people with experience and expertise, AEW should understand that too many cooks spoil the dish. Wrestling fans want to see Cassie Lee and Jessica McKay in the ring, and we all know that they are an asset to any company. A picture surfaced of Cassie in the audience during AEW’s Double or Nothing, so we may see her in the company soon where his husband already tasted success. WWE released Superstars with immense potential in the last two years. AEW should eye on bringing them to the company to raise and increase eyeballs to their product.

Hiring talented people to coach talent is a good choice, but it doesn’t take away the fact that people watch the action between the ropes. They pay for the tickets to watch the action like the one between The Rhodes Brothers and Britt Baker vs Thunder Rosa or anything involving Jon Moxley, who goes extreme and brings the best out of him and his opponents.

It’s about time that AEW shifts focus from hiring veterans and mostly veterans to hiring breakout superstars. If it isn’t for the fans, there will be no AEW or WWE, and the fans come to see the people between the ropes and enjoy their in-ring action. Focus on those that bring in the dollars and know how to put on a show. It is this action that catches the audience’s imagination and excitement. Repetition is not the key to success, and WWE Raw has proved it with its dipping viewership.
