Five matches worthy of a WrestleMania main event
These are five main events that stand out more than what’s announced for WrestleMania 38.
WrestleMania season doesn’t seem to have the same level of momentum this year. Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns are going to face off, champion versus champion, stifling the rest of the men’s division. Ronda Rousey is back, for better or worse. And then there are the rumors of Stone Cold Steve Austin coming back after 19 years away from the ring. Interesting right? What about the rest of the roster? The people that are there week in and week out?
WWE may not value the entire roster of men and women in the promotion, but this list looks at five WrestleMania main event level matches that would build the right type of excitement heading into the biggest event of the year.
Four Horsewomen Face-Off
This is the match that WWE cannot miss before it is too late. Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch, and Bayley are four of the most important wrestlers of this generation. WWE has the opportunity to create one of the biggest matches in wrestling history. All the company must do is put the care and consistency in the booking of each of them. The best part is that this match doesn’t need the titles to tie up the entire division. It’s about these four women, their legacies together, and their contributions to professional wrestling.
Imagine the Four Horsewomen standing across from each other while the fans lose their minds at the start of the match. These ladies have all the abilities needed to put together one of the best matches wrestling has seen. In many ways, it would be a love letter to the industry and it’s something that WWE needs to put together before it’s too late.
AJ Styles versus Finn Balor
Remember when AJ Styles and Finn Balor had a throw-away match at TLC in 2017 because of rampant illness that hit the WWE roster? The announcement of the match itself almost broke Wrestling Twitter, and they delivered on the expectations for nearly 20 minutes.
Now imagine what they could do with months to properly build a feud. Balor and Styles have intertwining histories, without facing each other in an extended one-on-one feud. There’s a story to be told here and telling it would excite wrestling fans. Both Balor and Styles are two of the best in-ring performers on the roster and individuals that are perpetually over with the fans. Give these two men 30 minutes and it would be one of the best matches of the year, regardless of promotion.
Mustafa Ali versus Roman Reigns
WWE missed the boat on Mustafa Ali. So much so, that he’s determined to force the company’s hand in releasing him, even if that means sitting on the sidelines for two years. But step into the multiverse and find a world where Ali is built as the underdog contender for Roman Reigns. That is the type of singles match that would create a WrestleMania moment that would stand the test of time. Ali standing across from Roman Reigns is the “overcome all odds” story that WWE is consistently looking for. They told it successfully once in the past with Daniel Bryan, only at the behest of fans. The same thing would need to happen here for that to be the case. Unfortunately, we live in different times as the WWE is more adamant to do exactly the opposite of what fans would like to see.
Seth Rollins versus Roman Reigns
Seth Rollins versus Roman Reigns at the 2022 Royal Rumble was just a hint of what these two men could do at this level. Yes, they’ve had singles matches against one another in the past, but the level they are operating at today is different. So much so, that they could easily headline a WrestleMania.
Fans loved their match at the Royal Rumble, and the Dusty finish shows that the company wants to go back to them at some point. Since these two are top names in the company, one would expect them to get the billing as such.
Rhea Ripley versus Bianca Belair
This is about the future of WWE. Not just the women’s division, but building two individuals that can be long-term, crossover stars for the promotion. Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley are two women that can carry the company and they are often talked about in a way that makes them linked at the hip. They could easily carry a feud strong enough to build them into a main-event quality match for a WrestleMania. WWE continues to hint at Belair and Ripley as a feud to watch for in the future.
While some of the other matches mentioned may not need the championship, this is one that does at this particular time. Keep an eye on how Belair and Ripley are booked in the future as these two ladies can headline a show together.
The build-up for WrestleMania 38 has left a lot to be desired. There’s still time left, but nothing announced causes a burst of excitement for fans and viewers. These are five match suggestions that could carry a show, but unfortunately, the WWE doesn’t book individuals outside its immediate view in such a fashion.
