WWE: Vince McMahon’s decision to push Ricochet might be too little, too late

It looks like the current WWE Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn will face Johnny Knoxville at WrestleMania 38. But that match might not be for the Intercontinental Championship because Zayn will face Ricochet for the IC title on the March. 3 episode of Friday Night Smackdown.

And it’s almost certain that Ricochet will win the title on Friday because the Zayn vs Knoxville match does not need the IC title on the line at the Grandest Stage of Them All. Most fans were surprised that Ricochet is in an IC title match let alone potentially winning it tonight, but what is even more surprising is that he’s set for a big push.

The rumored report said that Ricochet is currently slated to be the second top Babyface behind Drew McIntyre on the blue brand. Even though I’m a big Ricochet fan, I’m surprised that he’s getting a push because I thought it might be too late for Ricochet to get a push. It’s not I don’t think he deserves the push; it’s just he should’ve got that push a long time ago.

Is now a good time for WWE to push Ricochet?

There was a time when Ricochet was over, that was in 2019-2020. That was the right time to push him. Paul Heyman wanted to push Ricochet as a key player on the Raw roster back when he was in charge of the show. But Vince McMahon did not see Ricochet as a top guy, hence why he is in the position that he is today before the rumored report.

Ricochet cooled down a bit in late 2019. But he could still have a good position on the roster if he wins his matches. And it looks like his career is going to be fine until he hit a roadblock known as Brock Lesnar. Lesnar destroyed him in a quick-minute squash match. And his career in the WWE wasn’t the same since. After that, he was just doing low-card matches on Raw and he was just wrestling regularly on Main Event.

Once Ricochet was drafted to Smackdown back on Oct. 4, 2021, he was getting used more on TV. He’s been tag team matches with Cesaro. And besides getting more TV time, he got new music. It’s not as good as his original WWE theme, but it looks like the theme is benefiting him since he’s getting a push.

Again, I don’t mind the idea of Ricochet winning the Intercontinental Championship because no one wants to see Zayn vs Knoxville for the IC title. But I don’t think this will lead to a better position like facing Roman Reigns for the Universal Champion because I don’t believe it.

I honestly believe that the only reason why Ricochet could win the IC title is so they can take the title away from Zayn and he can do the Knoxville match without the IC title. And he can then defend the title against someone like Sheamus and he can beat Ricochet in Dallas, Texas. If not at WrestleMania, he’ll lose it back to Zayn at WrestleMania Backlash.

When I first heard that Ricochet is challenging Sami Zayn to an IC title match on this week’s Smackdown and that he’s getting a big push, my first reaction is that I’ll believe it when I see it. I don’t doubt that he’s winning the IC title. I doubt McMahon is pushing him as the second top Babyface on the blue brand. That should’ve happened two years ago. Now it might be too little, too late.
