Major news hit on Sunday as Fightful Select reported that Jonathan Gresham requested his release from Ring of Honor/All Elite Wrestling. This came on the heels of losing the Ring of Honor World Championship to Claudio Castagnoli at ROH Death Before Dishonor the night prior.

According to the Fightful report, Gresham asked for his release prior to the PPV. The report mentions a lack of communication between AEW and Gresham leading up to the weekend, and that led to Gresham feeling disrespected. The lack of time for the championship match was also mentioned as a point of contention.

The report also mentions a meeting between Gresham and Khan that led to the former “cussing out” the latter. Gresham’s side also commented that he is “done with wrestling for the foreseeable future after this month.”

Gresham had been in the headlines hours before his title defense at the PPV for comments that were revealed in an interview with Wrestle Purists hours before the show. The two comments that caught the most attention were those about his relationship with AEW President and CEO, Tony Khan, and his thoughts about the stereotypes of Black wrestlers.

“To be honest, I’ve not really talked to him. I don’t know what he thinks about me,” Gresham said about Khan in the interview. “I’ve had very short conversations with him, when I say short, I mean short. So, I dunno. I would hope that he values me, I don’t know though. So, we’ll find out in the coming weeks, months I guess.”

Gresham isn’t the first individual to express frustration with AEW in such ways. Many will recall the situation involving Big Swole to start off 2022. Thunder Rosa and Hikaru Shida are two other individuals that have expressed frustration with the company as well. As of the Fightful report, AEW had not commented on Gresham’s statements or request for release, but eyes are on whether Khan will take to Twitter to make questionable statements as he has in the past.
