3 big matches for GUNTHER at WrestleMania 40
WrestleMania 40 is coming and there’s a lot of questions around what is going to happen at the showcase. Even with Elimination Chamber on the calendar, there’s no telling what the card will hold. One thing is for sure, GUNTHER is expected to have a big match on the card. Against who? There’s no telling. He’s in the midst of a 600+ day run as champion and the main event scene is bogged down thanks to injuries and part-timers inserting themselves. But, if WWE looks to book a major match for the Intercontinental Champion, these are three matches that jump off the page.
Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn is a consummate fan favorite. Even when he was attempting to be a heel, the crowd couldn’t help themselves but to cheer him on. He gave a powerful promo during the February 5 edition of Monday Night Raw and it is time to see him with WWE gold around his waist. Zayn has held the WWE Intercontinental Championship three times in the past, but unfortunately for him it was during a time when WWE’s creative direction was running in circles. That caused his title reigns to be basically pointless and easily forgotten. Tagging him as the man to defeat Gunther at WrestleMania 40 would be a major career moment for him in what has been a strong last two years.
Bron Breakker
Gunther has enjoyed a 600+ day run as the WWE Intercontinental Champion. That run has established him as one of the best wrestlers in the world, and a future main champion if there ever was one. But there’s an interesting trivia question that took some research to find an answer. Gunther’s last pinfall defeat came on April 5 at the hands of Bron Breakker. The same Breakker that set the main roster on fire with his performance at The Royal Rumble. As he’s set to leave WWE NXT, setting him up with multiple squash matches, then pitting him against Gunther at WrestleMania 40 would be a great way to show that WWE is committed to presenting him as a top talent of the future.
Chad Gable
There is still meat on the bone for Chad Gable versus Gunther. The image of Gable’s children crying as their dad was pummeled is an easy promotional tool to hype up their next match. Gable has lost a little steam since those matches for the title, but WWE could quickly heat him back up. He’s a fan favorite among wrestling viewers and seeing him overcome the major obstacle that is Gunther at a feature event like WrestleMania is exactly what the show is built upon.
