The New England Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX, whether if you, or the National Football League like it or not. Roger Goodell and the NFL have been under hot fire this year, from off-the-field issues including Ray Rice’s incident with his fiancée, to controversial calls like the Dallas Cowboys-Detroit Lions playoff game where a pass interference flag was picked up in a crucial part of the game. Then of course, Deflate-Gate, and the way the NFL did not find any evidence to prove that New England really cheated. All of which brought up a popular topic in the internet world: Is the NFL rigged?
Of course not. It’s the dumbest thing anybody could write in a comment box on a sports blog. The NFL is not rigged. The NBA isn’t rigged, and neither is Major League Baseball. There is no conspiracy. The argument is utterly ridiculous. Conspiracies are made up by losers who don’t get their way in life. The Illuminati isn’t real and Bigfoot doesn’t stalk the woods, so get over it, and move on with your life.

Besides, if the NFL was rigged, wouldn’t Dallas, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Denver, and Green Bay be in the Super Bowl ever year? Those five teams are easily the most popular in the league, by far, especially the Cowboys. The NFL would want to get as much viewership as possible for the Super Bowl, and these teams can offer a major pull. But neither of them were in the Super Bowl this year, because none of these teams were not the two best. Which means the NFL is authentic.
But it is socially a well-known fact that professional wrestling is rigged, and there is an invisible hand pulling the strings backstage. They give the audience what they want. The most popular wrestlers always get their spot on the card. Wrestlers that draw attention and sells the most merchandise tend to win a lot of matches. The most popular teams in the NFL aren’t always good. Dallas until this year was bad for almost a decade. The Pittsburgh Steelers have fallen off the map. This never happens in pro wrestling, a sport that IS rigged. The most popular wrestlers never lose a ton of matches, they are always in title contention. Take Daniel Bryan for example, World Wrestling Entertainment’s most popular wrestler, will probably headline a second WrestleMania in a row this year.
Now, let’s compare pro wrestling and football. What do they both have in common? Big, strong, highly outspoken, high testosterone, possibly-on-steroids-but-who-really-knows, 22-35 year olds with plenty of attitude. Wrestling has had a history of disgruntled men who talk to reporters and bloggers in frustration. If they don’t they’re getting the spotlight they deserve, a wrestler will certainly let you know. CM Punk is a great example of this, he was openly upset with his spot on the card with outside media.
My argument to the NFL conspiracist is, if everybody in the NFL, including players (which is kind of important because they’re the ones making the plays on the field) knew it was rigged, don’t you think some players would be outraged that they’re not winning championships, not making the playoffs, or frustrated at whatever their role may be? Kind of like how CM Punk was frustrated that he was not in a main event match at WrestleMania. He spoke to the media about it.
Don’t you think CB Richard Sherman of the Seahawks, who is one of the smartest, most outspoken and opinionated player in the NFL have something to say about it? Something like, ‘the league failed us’ or ‘Roger wouldn’t let us win’.
All I know is that the NFL is in no way rigged, and that the argument that the league does control who wins is completely stupid. The fact that I wrote this to argue that narrative is laughable.
