WWE Extreme Rules 2015: Why Seth Rollins Must Steal the Show

This weekend Seth Rollins will probably be in the biggest match of his young career. This is the first big event of him as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and he needs to make sure that when Extreme Rules is over with, everyone will be taking about his match vs. Randy Orton.

The WWE has given the ball to Seth Rollins and he isn’t going to be able to fumble it or even show a glimpse of not being able to handle the weight of being the champion. Vince McMahon has always been big on the larger than life superstars—the guys who have the build of a Greek God and one that can represent the company both inside and especially outside of the ring. This is why John Cena was chosen quickly to be the face of the WWE and probably why Roman Reigns was the heir apparent.

Rollins has a good look but he’s also not the big and strong type that Mr. McMahon usually chooses to represent the company. While he has made exceptions in the past, e.g., Bret Hart, HBK, Edge, and Daniel Bryan. In the case of Hart, HBK and Edge, they had to prove themselves over a course of time with runs with the Intercontinental Championship. Also, the WWE was going through a transitional period.

With Daniel Bryan, the fans forced his hand to crown him as the Champion—look how short the runs were. Granted his last run after last year’s WrestleMania wasn’t due to his performance but who’s to say that run would have lasted any further than into SummerSlam?

I think Triple H has all the confidence in the world in Rollins and I’d bet he had to fight pretty hard to convince Vince to go with him. I could be wrong because, after all, Vince does like to throw an occasional curve ball at the fans. But when he had Brock Lesnar as champion and the chance to make Reigns the next one, I found it hard to believe that he would have just gone along with having both big men lose for nothing.

Rollins can go in the ring with anyone. His skills are special and he can have a great match on any given night, as can Randy Orton. These two stars should be able to have a very good match, but Orton needs to do everything he can to help Rollins get to that next level—a lot like Triple H, Chris Benoit, and Mick Foley did for him.

If this match is anything less than memorable and Rollins doesn’t pull out every trick he has in his bag then his reign as WWE Champion could be over much quicker than he expected. John Cena hasn’t had a run as WWE Champion in a while and he still has a few good years left in him. Reigns is getting over his post Mania loss and the crowd seems to be taking to him now – he could be look to again and very quickly could be put into a program against his former Shield brother.

Unfortunately for Rollins, this may be his fate as champion for the time being until he proves to everyone, especially Vince McMahon and the rest of the power that be that he is the real deal and one star the company can count on to help push the brand into new heights.
