Can WWE Divas Ever Main Event WrestleMania?
After Charlotte reveals her major ambitions on SmackDown, will the WWE Divas ever earn a main event match at WrestleMania or another major PPV?
On this most recent episode of SmackDown, Charlotte received a vignette prior to her tag team match alongside Becky Lynch against Sasha Banks and Naomi. In recent weeks segments such as this have been devoted to the recent arrivals from NXT, but the genetically superior second-generation star might have had the most compelling thus far. In it, Charlotte states defiantly that she will go places a WWE Diva has never gone before, including the goal of being in a WrestleMania main event.
In the video, Charlotte looks to UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey as an inspiration, as she has become the biggest draw in the entirety of the MMA world. Charlotte believes that the ability of all of the women that have been promoted from NXT to the main roster can replicate that success in the WWE Divas division. With that confidence and assured nature, there is no doubting that she is Ric Flair’s daughter. But it raises a question that grows more intriguing by the week: will the Divas ever main event any PPV, let alone WrestleMania?
At first glance, it seems unthinkable in the male-dominated world of WWE that such a situation would ever exist. The Divas Championship, and previously the women’s championship before that, has forever been confined to the middle of the card, in spite of being the biggest prize for a significant section of the roster. Frankly, many would have a right to think of Charlotte’s words as full of inspiration and ambition, but lacking in serious feasibility. The last time the WWE Divas were said to have had the genuine main event of an episode of RAW was when Trish Stratus and Lita contested the Women’s Championship in December 2004.
The Divas Revolution has certainly gathered steam, becoming an integral part of television in the last few weeks. The division appears not only relevant, but a critical part of WWE due to presenting women as powerful, amazing athletes.
Charlotte, among numerous others typify those aims, but still it will take many traditional, conservative fans plenty of convincing that they can headline any event, be it on free television or a major PPV. Times are changing, and personally, I think this momentum they are riding is the ideal opportunity to prove how devoted they are to their female stars.
Main event doesn’t mean the same thing it once did in WWE, as their can be multiple matches throughout the card that can be considered of main event caliber. Obviously, the main championship in the business is the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and nobody can expect it to lose the headline spot in most scenarios. That doesn’t mean that the commentary team or booking department can bill a Divas Championship match between Charlotte, Nikki Bella, Paige, Sasha Banks, etc, as one of the main event bouts on a card. It gives their cause legitimacy, showing that the company is behind their cause and want the fans to buy into that as well.

The argument the fans don’t buy the WWE Divas as being capable of being main event draws is untrue, as many of the Divas are immensely popular and big sellers of merchandise, and two never going to change if it isn’t at least attempted. If they hand the women the bat and they hit a home run, then all thoughts that they can’t manage the spotlight will dissipate, and that will be an immense blessing for all the hard-working female performers. This would result in them being given stronger storylines, more television time and exposure across all platforms that can parallel the superstars, because they would have proven they are worthy of that spot.
All we can hope is that the Divas are given that chance one day soon, and when they have it, that the fans respond as raucously as they can.
