Could WWE Benefit from Adding More Titles?

Could the return of the mid-card titles improve the WWE landscape?

In the last few months I’ve watched a lot of the Attitude Era episodes of Raw and PPV’s. When I compare that period of wrestling history to the current landscape of WWE, I’m left wondering if bringing back some of the mid card title belts would bring back more competition to the men that would be chasing them.

Anyone who has watched that era will remember the European, the Light Heavyweight and the Hardcore titles being a massive part of the product. They were in fact an amazing stepping stone to bigger things for the younger talent, as well as a great way to give the lower card guys a reason to be in the ring at times.

A who’s who of WWE held the European belt, among them Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Owen Hart, Kurt Angle and Jeff Hardy all held the belt. All of them benefited from initially holding that belt, most notably Kurt Angle.

Taka Michinoku, Dean Malenko and X-Pac were some of the most notable names to hold the Light Heavyweight title.

The Hardcore belt was originally handed to Mankind, but was made famous by the likes of Crash Holly, Raven and the Big Boss Man. I’ll never forget the 24/7 rule that saw a ridiculous amount of men (and women) hold the belt.

Whilst the hardcore title would probably never make an appearance again, due to the PG rating, both the European and Light Heavyweight titles could revitalize the under-card.

There’s so many men on the current roster that seem to be aimlessly pushed into feuds with nothing to aim for.

If men like Rusev, Dolph Ziggler or even Damien Sandow are not currently deemed worthy of chasing the U.S. or Intercontinental titles a shot at the European belt would give them a reason to be on tv. Rather than just having them fight over their current or former valets.

Throwing Neville, Adam Rose or Sin Cara into feuds over the light heavyweight belt would bring a whole new dynamic to the under-card.

A lot of the men mentioned, whilst they are great in the ring, at times lack a direction. With the addition of these belts they would at least have a real reason to face off.

The perfect way to add talent from NXT to the main roster would be to push them into either of the new divisions. Pushing someone like Sami Zayn as a Light Heavyweight champion would instantly get him over with the WWE Universe and give him a reason to be there.

One major thing you notice from watching the Attitude Era Raws are the fact that people like D’Lo Brown, when he held the European belt, had some of the best matches on the under-card. Nowadays we seem the umpteenth confrontation between Ziggler and Rusev each week.
