Kevin Owens Should Leave WWE Night of Champions as Intercontinental Champion

Kevin Owens can be the guy to resurrect the Intercontinental Championship at WWE Night of Champions.

More from WWE

Thursday night on SmackDown, Kevin Owens cut a promo backstage with Renee Young. In the interview, he proclaimed that his next challenge would be to silence the people who have made fun of him and his weight. Owens ended the interview using Ryback’s catchphrase “Feed Me More”.

It seems now that Owens has his sights set at Ryback and his WWE Intercontinental Championship. Though the match has not been confirmed, it seems as almost a guarantee that these two will meet at Night of Champions. With Owens now setting his eyes on the Intercontinental Championship, he should now be the next person to win this once iconic title.

For the last couple of years, the Intercontinental Championship has been in limbo. The championship has had no real direction, with forgettable champions holding the title. Champions such as Ezekial Jackson, Curtis Axel, Big E and Drew McIntyre have held the belt, and did nothing but tarnish the belts reputation.

The Intercontinental Championship used to be known as the stepping stone before winning the WWE Championship. Past superstars such as Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold, The Rock, and Triple were all former Intercontinental Champions. They used the championship and their reigns to solidify themselves as future stars in the business.

Today there hasn’t been an Intercontinental champion since Jeff Hardy in 2008, who went from a successful Intercontinental Championship run to later on win the WWE Championship. Owens though can be the guy who ends this streak of mediocrity.

Since coming up from NXT in June, Owens has presented himself as the next big star in the wrestling world. After defeating John Cena in his debut match back at Elimination Chamber, Owens went on to have two more classic’s with Cena. Owens recently defeated Cesaro at SummerSlam and now looks poised to win his first title.

Ryback, who is the current champion, has really not done anything since winning the belt back at Elimination Chamber. Ryback successfully defended the championship at SummerSlam against Big Show and The Miz. However, the feud was forgettable and did nothing to help strengthen the title.

Owens winning the title would finally put an up and comer poised to be a future star wearing the belt. Owens’ body of work also would put a strong worker wearing the belt as well. WWE was hoping to do this with Daniel Bryan. Unfortunately, because of his injuries, they had to nix this idea.

Along with not having future stars as champion, the title also hasn’t had a marquee match as well in a long time. The last time the Intercontinental Championship was in a big match was when Randy Orton defended it against Cactus Jack at Backlash 2o04. Owens, though, could change that trend.

Owens is a wrestler who seems that he can have a great match with anyone and putting the Intercontinental Championship on him could help build up other superstars. Just like Cena did with the United States Championship, Owens can also help build up the mid-card wearing the Intercontinental Championship.

Owens could have a classic run like superstars of the past wearing the strap for multiple months and then dropping it to another future star (possibly Finn Balor). After a strong run as Intercontinental Champion, Owens can then set his sights at the WWE Championship.

With Owens putting Ryback in his sights, WWE should make Night of Champions the night the Intercontinental Championship returns from near extinction.
