WWE Fastlane 2016: Dean Ambrose Deserves to Become the No. 1 Contender
By Carl Gac
Looking at how the main event of WWE Fastlane is set up and why Dean Ambrose deserves to be the No. 1 Contender.
Since Roman Reigns lost his WWE World Heavyweight Championship to Triple H, as part of the Royal Rumble, it’s looked increasingly likely that Reigns would go forward to face the new champion at WrestleMania. When the main event for Fastlane was announced as Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar for the No. 1 Contendership, it was still easy to see that Reigns would win the match and go on to avenge his loss of the belt. But in the last few weeks, WWE has done something they have struggled with of late, they’ve made an obvious result seem unlikely, and it’s all come from the booking of Ambrose.
On Monday we saw Ambrose lose his WWE Intercontinental Championship to Kevin Owens during the Fatal Five-Way match for the belt. The IC Title was somewhat of a quandary going into Fastlane, as Ambrose still proudly held it but it was something of an unnecessary millstone around his neck. To give us the slim idea that Ambrose could possibly walk into ‘Mania as the No. 1 Contender, he needed to lose that belt and have something bigger to look at going into the biggest night of the year.

In the last few weeks, it’s Ambrose that has been booked the strongest against his two foes. Nobody has got in the face of Brock Lesnar like Ambrose has in the last few weeks. On Raw Ambrose showed his fighting spirit while Roman Reigns was seen shaking hands with Paul Heyman and was then attacked by the Dudley Boyz while Lesnar wasn’t even in attendance. If the WWE is hoping to put some intrigue into the triple threat match they have done it, it’s just a shame that they’ll probably still give the win to Reigns and go down the path that they have had planned for a while.
All three men in this No. 1 Contender’s match are basically babyfaces. Everyone loves Lesnar and the Suplex City stuff will always get him over with the crowd. The crowd will always get behind Ambrose and he has that air of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper about him, the loose cannon that could snap at any moment. Reigns is the man that WWE want to be the next John Cena, the next big guy to carry the company on his back. It looks like the reaction to Ambrose may not make any kind of difference in the booking but he should be the guy that gets strapped to the rocket for the moon.

The biggest intrigue between these three men has to be the teased tension between Ambrose and Reigns. While it looked like Ambrose would probably be the man to turn heel on his long time friend, that has now seemingly been thrown out the window. In a perfect world, Ambrose would take out Reigns during the match at Fastlane and then focus on his problems with Lesnar. What will probably happen is Reigns and Ambrose will combine to take out Lesnar, then Reigns will get the better of Ambrose and win the match to head to ‘Mania and get his belt back.

Ambrose has proved that he has all the attributes to be the next big babyface for WWE. In-ring talent, charisma, a connection with the audience. You could say that right now he is the biggest baby face that the company has, it’s just a shame that Vince McMahon is probably hell-bent on fulfilling the Roman Reigns journey for the title. Come Sunday night I may be very wrong, and Ambrose may be heading for a showdown with Triple H, I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing Roman Reigns regain his WWE Title come Apr. 3.
