WWE WrestleMania 32: New Day Can’t Be Wasted at the Show

New Day can’t be thrown away in a WWE Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania.

After coming on the scene as horrible babyfaces in 2014, Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods turned heel and became the most entertaining team in WWE. They arguably are the most over act in the company. Their promos are fantastic and the in-ring work is a bit underrated if anything.

The WWE tag team division has mostly been thrown away. The Usos are kind of just there. The Dudley Boyz are around to put others over. The Ascension haven’t done anything relevant in over a year. Kalisto became a singles star away from Sin Cara. Oh, and Los Matadores hasn’t been seen for about six months.

Given how over New Day is with WWE and the fans, though, they have become the outlier. They get their spot on every show and are made to look important. It shows that WWE knows how to book tag teams, they just often get lazy.

So we’re only three weeks away from WrestleMania 32. New Day has little direction heading into the show despite coming off a phenomenal title match against Chris Jericho and AJ Styles on Raw.

Getting this bout at WrestleMania would have been awesome. With just a few minutes of added time, it could have been one of the better tag matches seen at the Show of Shows in who knows how long. Since Y2AJ is no more, though, this won’t be happening. It’s too bad because what was seen on Raw was special and goes beyond the shortened version in the video above.

So what is the reality of the situation?

Unfortunately, we may be on our way to a New Day vs. League of Nations match at WrestleMania. The interaction started at WWE Fastlane during the Cutting Edge Peep Show that totally did not reek of awesomeness. It was more of an eye-roller than anything.

This would continue online with New Day mocking Sheamus, Rusev, King Barrett and Alberto Del Rio. While the video was comical, the idea of a feud and match at WrestleMania didn’t seem good.

The path it seems we may be on is a six-man tag match between New Day and League of Nations. This would be a non-title contest as well. The idea of a six-man title contest happening could work, but WWE hasn’t done that before and probably won’t want to egg on Kenny Omega.

LoN hasn’t done much to establish themselves despite commentary heavily praising them. They were booked poorly coming out of the Roman Reigns feud in Dec. and looked foolish. Fans didn’t take them seriously then and still don’t now after taking a pile of losses to Reigns, Kalisto and others. Doing this weird arm spin in their entrances isn’t helping either.

The other option is a fatal 4-way match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. It’s not a bad concept to get multiple teams on the WrestleMania card, but we’ve seen this back to back years. WrestleMania 31’s tag title match was actually pretty good, though. The Usos and Dudley Boyz would probably be added to this with New Day and League of Nations and take a one-way ticket to Kickoff Show City.

An alternative could have been a triple threat TLC match for the belts. With a Hell in a Cell and (likely) ladder match on the card, doing another gimmick bout would be overkill. The Unicorn Trio gets their fair share of time on main roster programming, but a reward at WrestleMania would be beneficial. Why not make the IC title match a one on one between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn? This would leave another gimmick match opening.

Based on the options, it seems New Day’s first (and maybe only) title defense at WrestleMania may look like an afterthought. Their match is going to be overshadowed by the main event. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar, Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker, the Divas triple threat and Styles vs. Jericho. It’s a lot to try to jump over since all those matches will have greater build than whatever Big E, Kingston, and Woods do.

Whatever New Day ends up doing at WrestleMania will be entertaining. It just won’t be enough.
