What If WWE Isn’t Reforming Bullet Club?

WWE has been teasing a Bullet Club reunion for weeks now, but is that what they are actually planning?

Before AJ Styles, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows ever set foot in a WWE ring, fans have been expecting them to reunite the Bullet Club, or some version of it. Granted, those expectations were amplified because former NXT champion Finn Balor has been teasing it for months.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen WWE hinting at a reformation with Anderson and Gallows attacking Roman Reigns, aiding Styles in the process. While Styles has denied any involvement, the message being sent is clear: the Bullet Club is coming back.

But is it all just a ruse on WWE’s part? Think about it: for all of the criticism we give them for not paying enough attention to the international scene, the last year’s worth of signings show WWE is paying a lot of attention to it. They know fan expectations for Bullet Club and have allowed their superstars to continue inflaming the hype. How often does WWE allow that kind of freedom? How often do they allow their superstars to take the reins of their own storylines like that? Not often. More importantly, how often is WWE this heavy-handed and obvious about the direction they are going? This whole thing stinks of a well-orchestrated bait & switch.

For one thing, Styles is arguably WWE’s hottest babyface right now. He’s on Raw, he’s on Smackdown, and not only is he phenomenal in the ring, but he’s proven good on the stick, as well. Why would they mess around with that and make him a heel, as Anderson and Gallows clearly are? Unless their hope is to make them fan-favorite antiheroes as The Shield were, but remember they started out purely as heels.  And it’s a big gamble expecting fans to be as familiar with Anderson and Gallows (whether he was Festus or not) as they are comfortable with Styles.

The other possibility is that Balor will get called up to the main roster, which seems more likely now that he’s lost the NXT title, and take over leadership of the stable at Styles’ expense. Remember that Styles didn’t join Bullet Club until after Balor had been kicked out of the group, so they have no reason to be friends. Or, and this seems a definite possibility, Anderson and Gallows destroy Styles, cause him to lose his title match with Reigns, and Bullet Club never forms at all.

While the arrival of Bullet Club, or Bulletproof or whatever they want to call it, would be hugely exciting, it may be a good idea to start tempering expectations.
