Kevin Owens’ Alliance with Chris Jericho Sets Up Potential WWE Babyface Run

Kevin Owens joining forces with Chris Jericho could set up future events, potentially after WWE SummerSlam.

Chris Jericho entered into a feud with Enzo Amore and Big Cass on the August 1 episode of WWE Raw. He knew he couldn’t take them both on, though, so he turned to help for a bodyguard. Kevin Owens would step up as protection for Y2J, seemingly forming a tag team with his fellow Canadian.

We’re now in for a battle between these two duos. It helps strengthen the tag team division, and will keep Enzo and Big Cass in the spotlight.

However, there is potential for Owens to be the primary benefactor, as in turning babyface once this tag team feud concludes.

For the past four months, the former NXT Champion has performed terrifically, but his booking has been all over the place. He lost the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 32, defeated Sami Zayn at Payback, failed to win the IC title at Extreme Rules, didn’t win Money in the Bank, was defeated by his arch-rival at Battleground, and couldn’t win the fatal 4-way match on Raw. It left KO with nothing to do after the July 24 show. Being drafted 18th overall didn’t help either.

To go further in depth on Owens’ recent win-loss record, he sits at 10-14-1 since April 30 on WWE TV. While heels are supposed to lose, he’s being taken down more than he’s standing tall. The wins and losses haven’t been consistent either, as he may come out victorious in back to back matches, then fall in the same fashion.

In-ring performance hasn’t warranted this four-month stretch. WWE booking has, which may be a concern, but could also open the door for a face run. This sometimes happens when heels are beginning to lose momentum for potentially months at a time. WWE then flips the Superstar’s character upside down, and gives them a breath of fresh air. The more Owens loses, the more reason there is to make this happen.

The Jericho alliance gives clearance for this, though. It’s a younger star working with a veteran. A title of “bodyguard” may also be a giveaway for a potential feud as well. If past bodyguard friendships like Shawn Michaels and Diesel gives any indication, the star being developed is likely to break away as the good guy. While he has been on the WWE roster for over one year, Owens would fit this role.

WWE fans haven’t seen what Kevin Owens can do in a babyface role. It’s a position that’s unusual for him, as he mostly worked in ROH as a heel, and was in the pandering spot for one night. This was in his debut at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution, which also saw his heel turn hours later. The explosion of offense from a babyface Owens on CJ Parker was fun, exciting and a preview of what we could potentially see. How about that flip over the top rope?

Crowd reaction is also a factor toward Owens’ potential face turn. The WWE Universe has cheered this wrestler for months. He can get heat from the fans, but they seem to find it entertaining enough to give a positive reaction. His trolling, wit, and insults seem to draw this.

A split of Jericho and Owens would be ideal at SummerSlam. Enzo and Cass could win after the Canadians have match miscommunication. The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla could vent his frustrations with his tag partner, and as Owens walks, he could be struck from behind. This would lead to a beatdown that sees a feud spark for the fall on Raw. It would fit with the storyline from earlier in 2016 when Jericho couldn’t

A Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho alliance may only last so long. There’s decent potential for them to lose a potential match to Enzo Amore and Big Cass, which would ruin the partnership. It may lead to a change that could be necessary.
