Both shows save their best matches for Network specials, and in many cases, the main roster has actually done better than NXT in this regard. A.J. Styles’ matches in WWE have been lauded as some of the best this year. Sami Zayn’s matches in both NXT and on the main roster have likewise gotten said praise. Last year, John Cena’s open challenges and his feud with Kevin Owens and Cesaro led to some of the best matches of the year.
With so many top wrestlers on the main roster capable of putting on such high-quality performances, some fans might not even bother with NXT. This is especially true that the main shows are both on the Network and are close to each other. That leaves the weekly NXT broadcasts trailing behind the main shows in terms of fan interest.
There’s so much more regular hype for RAW and SmackDown when compared to NXT. So with match quality matching on more or less a regular basis, casual fans don’t have much of an incentive to watch ordinary NXT shows as much as they do for RAW and SmackDown.
