Finn Balor Should Return to WWE on SmackDown Live
By Jay Sichler
With his return rumored to be around or after WrestleMania, Finn Balor should re-debut on a brand new show, Smackdown Live.
Back in July’s WWE Draft, Monday Night RAW made a shocking selection when they drafted NXT star, Finn Balor with their third overall pick. This both was surprised because there were may established main roster stars still available such as John Cena, Roman Reigns, and Brock Lesnar.
RAW seemed to be looking towards the future and were banking on Balor becoming the face of RAW for years to come. It seemed that this was going to be true, as he took RAW by storm during the first month of him being on the main brand.
Balor won two matches on his first night winning a fatal four-way, then defeating Reigns in a No. 1 Contender’s match for the Universal Championship. The Demon King would then defeat Seth Rollins at Summerslam to become the first ever Universal Champion. The win though would come at a price, however.
During the match, Balor would severely dislocate his shoulder and tear ligaments in his shoulder as well. The injury would require surgery and Balor was forced to vacate the Universal Championship just one day after losing it.

While the rehab process was said to be 6 to 9 months, Balor has not been seen or mentioned on RAW since he left with his injury. WWE seemed to have huge plans for Balor before his injury as he was projected to have a significant run with the Universal Championship.
WWE will want to make his return as shocking and epic as possible, so a great way to do this would be having a return on the other brand, Smackdown Live.
While it hasn’t been announced, it seems likely that WWE will hold a draft lottery, like they did during the original brand extension. Smackdown, with one of their lottery picks, could randomly select Balor, moving him over to the blue brand.
WWE has done this before with stars who have been gone for significant time due to an injury. In 2004 during the lottery, RAW drew Edge, who had been out for a year due to a neck injury, moving him from the Blue Brand to the Flagship. The event occurred the next year, as well, in 2005 when Rob Van Dam, who was out for a long period of time due to a knee injury, was randomly selected by RAW, moving him over from Smackdown. WWE could do the same thing with Finn Balor.
Doing this would really help make Balor’s return epic, as he would be coming back for the first time in months on a brand new show and would help create buzz around Smackdown with them adding a top talent in Finn.

Balor going over to Smackdown could also open up the possibilities for many storyline options and opponents for him to face. RAW has quickly become the home brand for a lot of the past top NXT talents, plenty of which Balor has already had feuds with down in NXT. Samoa Joe, Sami Zayn, and Kevin Owens are all former NXT alumni and have all either faced or had feuds with Balor in developmental. This could lead to very repetitive feuds that fans have already seen down in NXT.
With Smackdown Live being the show that holds no NXT stars, fans would be able to see Balor clash with stars that we have never seen him do before. This includes AJ Styles, John Cena, and Randy Orton.
RAW, at the moment, also lacks top heels. With the exception of Kevin Owens, there really isn’t anyone worth Balor entering a feud with at the moment. However, on Smackdown Live, fans could finally get the long awaited clash of Styles and Balor
While the two were both members of the Bullet Club in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Balor had just left for WWE when AJ Styles joined NJPW in 2014, and the two have also yet to cross paths in WWE. Before the brand extension, Balor was down in NXT while Styles instantly joined the main roster upon joining WWE in 2016.

Styles and Balor could not only have one of the best feuds on Smackdown Live, but in all of the WWE. Along with Styles, Balor could work with top guys like Bray Wyatt, Orton, and Cena. Just like Styles, Balor has never worked with any of these stars and it would create interesting matchups for him.
WWE could also use in Balor in regards to the issues that Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley have been having with one another. It seems that Foley’s time on RAW will be coming to an end very soon and if Balor was to leave and join Smackdown Live they could use this event in their storyline.
If Finn Balor was to be drafted, or defect on his own due to his decision or finding a loophole in his contract Stephanie McMahon could use this to blame and fire Mick Foley. McMahon could blame a promising young star in Balor defecting to Smackdown Live as Foley’s fault, and thus fire him for his incompetence and his error of losing Balor to their competitor. This could then allow RAW to bring in a brand new General Manager, and give a justified and fair storyline reason as to why Mick Foley was relieved of his RAW GM duties.
