WWE SummerSlam 2017: Is a Shield Reunion a Possibility?

facebooktwitterreddit

The last time The Shield worked together was when the trio power bombed AJ Styles at Survivor Series, but could we see a match involving a reunited Shield at SummerSlam?

Ever since The Shield split up, it has nearly been impossible for The Shield to reunite. This is because, for the majority of his singles run, Seth Rollins was a heel while Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose were top babyfaces. So, it just didn’t make sense for the trio to get back together at any point.

Then, when Rollins finally did turn face, the brand split prevented a proper Shield reunion because Rollins and Reigns were on RAW, while Dean Ambrose was on SmackDown Live. Although, they did tease partial Shield reunions with Rollins and Reigns teaming up often on RAW.

Then, the Superstar Shakeup happened. This sent Dean Ambrose over to RAW. Now, all three former hounds of justice are all faces, and all three of them are on the same brand. So, it may be time to pull the trigger on a Shield reunion.

While a second run as The Shield is unlikely due to all three being top singles stars, WWE has a habit of banking on nostalgia acts for big events, and one match involving all three members of The Shield teaming up could provide that factor for SummerSlam.

Also, there is already an angle in place for this to occur. Dean has been involved in what seems like a year long feud with The Miz, and The Miz has called out Seth Rollins as a loser, as well. The Miz has the numbers game on them in individual match ups due to The Miztourage, but Seth has helped when Dean was ambushed, and Dean helped when Seth was ambushed.

Now, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins both have their eyes set on The Miz and The Miztourage. If only there was a third person to help Ambrose and Rollins even out the playing field…

Sure, Roman Reigns is eyeing the Universal Championship at SummerSlam, but what if (and that is a big ‘what if’) Roman Reigns loses to Samoa Joe on next week’s RAW and fails to become #1 contender?

The next logical move would be for Roman Reigns to continue and put an end to his feud with Braun Strowman at SummerSlam after their hellacious bout at Great Balls of Fire that will undoubtedly leave the Monster Among Men wanting revenge.

However, WWE may want to keep Strowman off TV to really drive home how serious that beating from Roman Reigns was, or WWE may insert him into the Universal Championship scene instead of Roman due to his win at Great Balls of Fire.

So, if WWE manages to get Reigns out of a match with possible opponents like Brock Lesnar or Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns will be without a plan for SummerSlam. WWE has been trying so hard to make Roman Reigns the next face of the company, and if they put him with the rest of The Shield for SummerSlam, he might actually get cheered for once.

Roman Reigns could easily get involved in the angle involving Ambrose, Rollins, and The Miztourage by claiming he wants a shot at the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam after losing his opportunity for the Universal Championship.

Then, The Miztourage will ambush Reigns, and Ambrose and Rollins will come out to make the save. Once the dust has settled, The Shield will be standing tall and standing together in the middle of the ring.

This would eventually lead to a six-man tag team match between The Shield and The Miztourage at SummerSlam, and this would be a good way to get fans cheering and excited as 3 top babyfaces properly get cheered while a proper heel will get booed and get beaten to a pulp.

With all of the main event activity involving Roman Reigns, it is a long shot that we could see a full Shield reunion at SummerSlam, but a partial reunion between Rollins and Ambrose is a stronger possibility.

Then again, Ambrose could just turn heel on Rollins and ruin the entire possibility.
