Could Johnny Gargano become a challenger for the NXT Championship in the near future on WWE NXT?
One thing is for sure, and that is Johnny Gargano is one of NXT’s best kept secrets right now. Dubbed ‘Johnny Wrestling’ by the fans, the former #DIY star has put on several classics since his debut with WWE in 2016. Not only did he produce Match of the Year candidates with former tag team partner Tommaso Ciampa, he also had some stellar singles matches.
His match with Ciampa at the Cruiserweight Classic last summer comes to mind. The response from fans was massive, and many said it was their favorite match from the tournament. Ciampa is a common thread here, but Gargano has proved that he can hang on his own. While he suffered a loss at the recent Takeover: Brooklyn, Gargano still put on a great performance.
Gargano is no doubt talented and a future star in WWE. He is very well rounded with his skill set and is able to connect with the fans. Fans rally behind him whether he is executing his technician side or he decides to fly high. The same can be said for past NXT stars such as Sami Zayn and Neville. Nothing is impossible for Gargano, whose style is reminiscent to the aforementioned men.

Whether Gargano challenges for the NXT Championship or not remains to be seen. The hot topic coming out of Takeover: Brooklyn is Adam Cole (Bay Bay!). The NXT Championship picture is occupied for the moment but it won’t last forever. Then, there is Ciampa that Gargano has to contend with. Once he returns from injury the feud between the two men will be revived once more. The feud between the former #DIY members has the potential to be white hot, and be pivotal for both men in their careers.

There has also been talk of a possible secondary Championship for NXT. While Ciampa is on the mend, who’s to say that this can happen? It’s the perfect opportunity for Gargano should it come to fruition. It may not be the NXT Championship, but that is one hell of a start. NXT has transcended into this next era and there is no question that Gargano is a huge piece of that puzzle. Again, with his consistent performance and bubbling potential coming out of future storylines, things certainly look good for Johnny Wrestling.
Now that Takeover: Brooklyn is over, what is next for Gargano? Does he continue to feud with Almas or does he feud with someone else? Could the secondary championship rumor come to life? There are many options to keep Gargano busy for the rest of 2017. Regardless of where the rest of the year takes Gargano, it looks promising.

Fans have learned over time to never say never when it comes to WWE, or pro wrestling in general. Gargano is more than capable to be in the NXT Championship picture. He’s championship material, and a big part of NXT’s recent success. The only question that remains is when WWE decides to pull the trigger on the former NXT Tag Team Champion.
