NXT Women’s Championship Ladder Match: Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Bianca Belair vs. Kairi Sane vs. Io Shirai vs. Candice LeRae vs. Mia Yim
I’ll be perfectly honest in saying this could be entirely wishful thinking, but a six-woman NXT Women’s Championship Ladder Match at NXT TakeOver: New York could be one of the top women’s matches NXT has seen to date. Perhaps now more than ever, the depth of NXT’s women’s division has been on display, and there’s no shortage of worthy challengers for Shayna Baszler.
On top of that, it’s worth noting that Baszler could be due for a call-up after WrestleMania. With the potential for an NXT Four Horsewomen vs MMA Four Horsewomen match at SummerSlam or Survivor Series, Baszler (along with Shafir & Duke) will need to be moved up so they have time to be established on the main roster. Baszler has been nearly unstoppable since capturing the title last year at TakeOver: New Orleans.

Kairi Sane did manage to get the title away from Baszler for a few months last year, but The Queen of Spades recaptured her title at WWE Evolution. If WWE wants to keep Baszler strong when she leaves NXT, losing the title in a chaotic match like this would certainly fulfill that requirement. It would also give NXT the chance to feature more than two women at a TakeOver event.
With the exception of a few multi-person matches in the past, we usually only see two members of NXT women’s division compete at TakeOver. With this, NXT could showcase six at once and chalk up another first for their recordbook. Despite coming up short in Phoenix, Bianca Belair’s amazing performance was certainly enough to warrant another shot at Baszler.
On top of that, Kairi Sane and Io Shirai have stayed in the hunt either against Baszler or against Shafir and Duke. There’s no denying the kind of amazing moments a ladder match would give us from “The Genius of the Sky” Io Shirai. The two final spots should go to arguably NXT’s most underutilized female talents right now.
Aside from being wrapped into the Gargano vs. Ciampa rivalry, Candice LeRae has struggled to make her mark in NXT. Working her way into this would give her a chance to shine, even if she doesn’t leave as champion. The same goes for “The Blasian Baddie” Mia Yim, who already has a decade of experience under her belt at only 29 years of age.
Again, this might be a long shot, but it would be an optimal choice by NXT to showcase their women’s division in New York. On top of that, this would follow the success of last year’s six-man ladder match in New Orleans. Making a habit of big matches like that for WrestleMania weekend isn’t a bad idea for NXT, and this would certainly fill that role.
