AEW and NXT Wednesday Night War: 3 winners of night #20
Jake “The Snake” Roberts
Most wrestling fans know a good promo when they hear it. There’s no specific way you have to talk, nor is there a prerequisite for using a bunch of scholarly terms – an expletive-filled Steve Austin promo can deliver the same impact as a pretentious Nick Bockwinkel soliloquy, for example.
But there is one thing all good promos have in common: they make the audience believe everything the wrestler says.

This is something every wrestler understands, but few have epitomized this requirement the way Jake “The Snake” Roberts has over the years. Roberts has battled more than his share of demons for the better part of four decades, but when he was right, he was arguably the best orator in the business, a man whose methodical, understated delivery stood out among the cacophonous, crazed promos and ensured that every syllable that left his mouth carried weight.
It was no different on this week’s Dynamite when the WWE Hall of Famer interrupted Cody’s pleas for MJF to confront him and dressed down the former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, ending his speech by teasing a new client – likely Brodie Lee or Lance Archer – to face Cody and telling “The American Nightmare” to never turn his back on someone he respects or is afraid of, before turning his back on Cody and leaving.
Will Roberts bring in Lee? Will it be Archer? Could it be someone else? We won’t find out until next week, but Roberts’ brilliance on the mic has me intrigued.
