Passing Judgment: The Creed Brothers are Coming for The Undisputed Tag Team Titles
By Ryan Page
With an emphatic number one contender’s victory on Raw, The Creed Brothers are coming for the Undisputed Tag Team titles. The duo made an impressive debut and had another signature win when they earned the championship match. The main roster rookies are about to lock up with a certified main event act in The Judgment Day. It could be easy to assume that this is a first shot destined to fall short, making Brutus and Julius Creed stronger. However, that may not be the case with how each team has performed on television.
A Stellar Debut for The Creed Brothers
The Creed Brothers debuted on October 30th for a match with Alpha Academy on Raw. For a main roster audience unfamiliar with their work, the bout was excellent. That it wasn’t even their best match in WWE is a testament to how good the rookie Creeds are. The combination of power and speed was beginning to feel misused by the end of their run on NXT. Still, with a new stage and new opponents, they already feel more explosive and exciting to align with their in-ring style.
You never get a second chance at a first impression, and WWE has nailed it with Brutus and Julius Creed. Even the comedy segments backstage are decent enough, with the duo having enough distance from the likes of Akira Tozawa to feel small. After that first match, they also showed out in the number one contender’s gauntlet match. The duo wrestled for a while and mixed it up with several opponents of different sizes and styles. That each one was good is precisely what you want in a tag team champion. New, energized, and able to work with everyone is the best way to revive a fading division.
Some Growing Cracks in Judgment Day
The Creed Brothers are coming for the Undisputed tag team titles, which means they face Judgment Day. Finn Balor and Damian Priest first won the titles at Payback in September. Since then, they have been a secondary source of heat for the heel faction as they continue to feud with the upper echelon of Raw talent. Throughout that time, the leadership of the group was under some doubt. The titles have increasingly been the only thing keeping the unity up.
For a new team like The Creed Brothers to win the title would likely send Judgment Day into a spiral, and it feels like we are approaching that time. The official breakup probably comes at or after WrestleMania, but the group’s strength must significantly diminish before then. Giving the undisputed to yet another team of main eventers killing time before Royal Rumble won’t facilitate that story. Losing to a new team in their first title defense almost certainly would, just in time for the official start to WrestleMania season.
Raw’s Massive Main Event Scene
Damian Priest and the rest of Judgment Day have been consistent fixtures on Raw’s main event. This has resulted in more make-shift tag teams, some good, others not, of top guys to challenge for the championships. As a result, teams across Raw and Smackdown have been fighting for television time and not much else. As Senor Money in the Bank, Damian Priest and his team must be at the top of the card. In the not-so-distant future, Priest himself or an unlucky one of his allies will be holding the top prize on Raw. That will make the tag team titles even less relevant, remaining locked on one show on people who do not often compete with the tag team division. Their monopolizing of the entire tag team division should end quickly.
If The Creed Brothers are coming for the Undisputed Tag Team Titles, it could do wonders for them. A division of the titles would be ideal, but even if they remain undisputed, just putting them on a traditional team would help both them and the division. In the short term, they would likely get to work with talent like Sami Zayn and Drew McIntyre. Those associations will help introduce them as legitimate talent to the WWE Universe. Winning the titles also gives a talented new team momentum while freeing the Judgment Day to continue their main event feuds and get the tag team division back up and running, heading onto the Road to WrestleMania. The Street Profits, New Day, and more all get to reinsert themselves into meaningful stories with new champions to chase.
The Creed Brothers are Coming for The Undisputed Tag Team Titles
Brutus and Julius have already begun their battle with Judgment Day, taking on Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh. The match ended as expected, with The Creeds on top. Julius and Brutus impressed fans yet again, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. The match also started an earnest feud that will significantly increase the Creed Brothers’ exposure. The titles need a new home, Judgment Day needs to begin their downward spiral, and Julius and Brutus deserve a real push. This match gives everyone involved what they need. It also gives the WWE Universe quality matches between a team of experienced stars and a fun rookie team off to a hot start.
