In a surprising “twist of fate”, newly crowned TNA World Heavyweight Champion Matt Hardy has just vacated the title. He made the announcement a short while ago on YouTube as part of the continuing “injunction” storyline that began after he won the championship from Ethan Carter III at Bound for Glory.
EC3 filed a legal injunction against Hardy shortly after losing the title to him in a Triple Threat match that also included Drew Galloway. The injunction was designed to keep Hardy off of any televised episodes of Impact Wrestling. Earlier today the storyline continued as TNA’s legal team learned the first court date to settle this dispute would be months away.
That meant TNA wouldn’t be able to showcase their most prestigious title for months. Hardy responded in a
stating that it “isn’t good news”, and mere hours later he relinquished the title claiming it was “best for TNA”. An announcement regarding the future of the championship is expected soon. Hardy insists he’ll get another shot and will become champion once more.
This is a strange development and an odd storyline for TNA to be pushing at such a turbulent time for the company. With questions surrounding TNA’s future still unanswered, why aren’t they looking to promote their World Championship through fierce competition between interesting characters? Instead they’re hoping to lure in fans through stories involving legal briefs and vacated gold. While it plays into EC3’s nature as a spoiled brat competitor, the benefits of that are short-term and relegated only to him. This does nothing for Matt Hardy. It makes him look like the “stand-up guy” of TNA, but does anyone think that will get him another World Championship? Or is it more likely his brother Jeff Hardy, or EC3 for that matter, will win the title first? It also pushes Galloway, who has been featured heavily of late, further into the background.
This may be TNA’s way of dealing with the overwhelming negative reaction to the title change. If so, they chose a distinctly “TNA” way of addressing it. Rather than giving Matt Hardy a lengthy, competitive title reign that might have changed fans’ minds, they decide turning the six-sided ring into an episode of Law & Order is what fans really want to see.
