Does John Cena’s New Media Deal Indicate Possible WWE Departure?

As The Rock did before him, is John Cena’s new media deal further proof that he may soon be leaving the WWE?

Like a smoke detector with a dead battery, the John Cena machine never stops. It was announced on Wednesday that Cena and Leftfield Entertainment have entered into a development deal which will create and produce “unscripted projects for television and digital platforms”.

Technically speaking, Cena has already been doing business with Leftfield as he is the star and executive producer of the Fox television series American Grit which is presented by Leftfield Pictures.

The show likely isn’t long for this world as disappointing ratings have network executives concerned about future seasons. It’s possible the show was sabotaged from within, as it’s worth mentioning that Cena himself couldn’t finish the show’s final obstacle course known as “The Circus“. But we won’t venture into tinfoil hat territory in this story; I have something else planned for that.

More from John Cena

In addition to his job hosting this year’s ESPYs and Kids Choice Awards, Cena and Leftfield are already working on several other reality projects that focus on real estate, construction, and even more yet to be named. The goal is to appeal to both male and female demographics and Cena contains the right amount of testosterone and chiseled-jaw good looks to pull it off.

The incredible success of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been an incredible motivation for Cena who has said that he “can only hope” for a post-wrestling career like that of The Rock. Whether it’s movies, television, video games or mobile applications, Rocky has been dominating all forms of entertainment while also throwing meat to the WWE audience every so often. Cena’s expanded partnership with Leftfield is a step in this same direction:

More from Daily DDT

"“Whether I’m in the ring for WWE or on a TV or film set, I approach all of my work the same way – with focus, authenticity and total commitment. I’m eager to bring that same work ethic to the team at Leftfield, and to create new kinds of programming that can inspire and push people to be their best. I’m living proof of what you can accomplish when that happens.”"

Cena has been the face of the WWE both in and out of the ring for over a decade. His work with the Make-A-Wish foundation as well as his “Rise Above Cancer” initiative paired with Susan G. Komen for the Cure have made him a household name around the world. Whether you like him or not, he is a role model, ambassador, and internet meme that seems to have a Midas touch with all things family-friendly. He is quite literally the best thing that could have happened to the WWE in the aftermath of the Attitude Era.

Talk of Cena’s departure from WWE started with his role in Amy Schumer’s 2015 comedy Trainwreck as well as a smaller role in the film Sisters that same year alongside Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. He was well-received by Hollywood and at least one extremely intelligent and good-looking member of the Daily DDT staff predicted this departure months ago. With the WWE draft looming large, don’t be surprised to see Cena sent to Smackdown, which will still remain the B-show to RAW regardless of the changes being made.
