Con: There Were Better Options

Once upon a time, “dream matches” were being created for AJ Styles. However you may feel about these Superstars — Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and John Cena — all were big names for him to feud with in Year One, including the Face That Runs the Place, which put him over the top at SummerSlam.

With Shane McMahon, he’s a name, sure. If you were looking for the technical showcase that steals the show, then you’re probably not going to get it here. There were better options out there if you wanted to reconfigure the WrestleMania 33 match card.

More from WrestleMania

If WWE nixed Cena’s mixed tag match, he could have squared off with Styles for Round 4. It would look similar to the Jericho series from last year, but the matches put on at Money in the Bank, SummerSlam and Royal Rumble makes it difficult to not want to see these two go head-to-head again.

Samoa Joe debuting on the SmackDown roster could have even led to a TNA rematch. WrestleMania could have been the opportunity to take this long-time rivalry onto the main stage, but that will have to be saved for another time.

What about the Undertaker? If WWE had really wanted to take Styles’ WrestleMania profile to the next level, they could have stuck with the Dead Man. It wouldn’t have been a technical showcase, but a money match to pit two stars that had never faced off. The Blue Brand could have been cemented as his “home” too. Remember those days?
