WWE WrestleMania 34: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns Represents More of the Same

If Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns is going to happen at WrestleMania 34, it’s not going to be anything new.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is already reporting the WrestleMania 34 main event to be Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship. This is even with WrestleMania 33 not taking place for another two weeks, Lesnar having yet to potentially win the title from Goldberg and 12 months of WWE programming having yet to air.

If WWE actually knows what they’re going to do in April 2018, it’s not a bad thing since they have been criticized for last-minute planning. Should they reconsider this headliner, though? Maybe, but if it’s kept the same then it would just be that — more of the same.

If Reigns vs. Lesnar takes place at WrestleMania 34, it will potentially mark the fourth straight event that either one of these stars is in the headlining match. The official one for 33 hasn’t been officially announced, but the Beast Incarnate vs. the former WCW star seems like a decent bet. It’s a safe move to make since these are the guys WWE have become most comfortable with in recent years, along with having tunnel vision direction for what they want to do. We saw that in 2016 with the WrestleMania 32 main event.

Lesnar vs. Reigns had the chance of being the one and only time these two faced off, but Seth Rollins cashing in Money in the Bank actually set up the potential WrestleMania 34 rematch. It was supposed to be the crowning achievement for the Big Dog, except WWE ended up spending the next year “rebuilding” him into a main event star, even though he arguably didn’t need it. That goes for next year too.

More from WrestleMania

There are other WWE stars that could use the spotlight of the main event at WrestleMania, someone who could have their career made out of it. This is anyone from Kevin Owens to AJ Styles, Bray Wyatt and other stars that are in a favorable position in April 2018. Even a Once in a Lifetime match like John Cena vs. the Undertaker would work in the main event, even if it’s not showcasing two rising stars. It has a fresh quality about it since it’s never happened on the big stage and may have a similar feel to something like Taker’s matches with Shawn Michaels in 2009 and 2010.

While Reigns vs. Lesnar was a fun, hard-hitting match in 2015, it’s something we have seen before with a likely different outcome the second time around. That would be the former Shield man, who’s already established as it is, getting another career-defining win that he probably doesn’t need.

There’s still plenty of time to change the WrestleMania 34 main event, as it’s 12 months in advance, injuries have yet to take place and Vince McMahon could always look to do something different tomorrow. Let’s see what happens on the road to the show.
