The Perfect 3 Candidates for The WWE Women's Mid-card Titles
By Ryan Page
It is the story that won't stop: additional women's championships are being floated again with no clear timetable for their introduction. There are three candidates for the WWE women's mid-card titles that would be perfect across Raw and Smackdown to carry some gold. The work of many of the women in the division has been impeccable, and fans are desperate to see them have more time outside of the top stars in the division. A lot of the concerns that existed when rumors started circulating are still a problem. Just looking at the Queen of the Ring for some guidance shows that WWE needs some help in writing for women outside of their world title scene. If they did go for new belts, though, who could wear them first?
Zelina Vega deserves this run on Raw as champion.
Regular viewers of Raw and WWE broadly tend to like Zelina Vega. What they usually do not like is that she is sent to the main event to lose with no build twice annually. It also almost always happens within five months of WrestleMania, a show she typically plays a minor role in. With a sustained push, Vega could be the women's champion. Even falling short of that, though, her infrequent runnings at the top would feel less like a ritual sacrifice and more like a real opportunity for the Queens, NY native.
In the men's division, many of the biggest stars get over with the United States or Intercontinental title first. They get a chance to be champions, earning some wins, iconic moments, and stellar segments. The story of a champion vs. their challenger is much easier to sell to fans. It is easy to follow. If the women had that same opportunity and that same built-in story for their mid-card feuds, Zelina, in particular, could be a real standout star. Showcasing her abilities as a performer feuds with stakes, along with earning real wins, could set her up to make the shot she has not been allowed to take yet.
Chelsea Green has more than earned a title on Smackdown.
Has anybody had a better year in WWE than Chelsea Green? Yes. Green is a quintessential comedy character, and the punchline often comes at her personal expense. However, has anyone in the division earned more praise and acclaim from the fans online? Maybe not. Chelsea is rising as a star to the point where everyone, not just her fellow Canadians in Toronto, is eager to see her win the Women's Money in the Bank match. She did not, but her antics and performance may have stolen the show anyway. Green would probably not have cashed in successfully; most of the main eventers at this point have beaten her in recent months. Likewise, her tag team with Piper Niven is losing some steam. However, an additional title could give her and Piper something to do if they manage to capture it.
The path here is simple. Let Green use Niven to protect her title reign in a sort of homage to Ted DiBiase of the Golden Era of wrestling. She can be the mouthpiece that sells the matches, take other hits or indignities to get the crowd laughing, and let Niven shine in some big matches. When Niven turns or fails to defeat her opponent, then Chelsea gets to step in and defend her title. This story could last an entire year before Niven turns on Green. By that time, though, both will have had more than enough by way of match time and experience to carry a great story between them. Then, the Chelsea for Ms. MITB agenda might actually have a shot of getting through WWE's creative process.
Natalya is a "free agent" and the perfect choice for a mid-card division.
Early reports indicate that a women's United States and Intercontinental Championship is the most likely scenario. While personally, those names leave a lot to be desired, having two is better than having just one. With only one mid-card title, which was discussed as a possibility in the early stages of this long-circulating rumor, two world champions will make it hard not to see the mid-card title holder as the actual top star in the division. However, WWE's newest re-signee, Natalya, is already a free agent across multiple shows and would be an excellent champion, especially if they only have one new title. Natalya, the legendary performer from a legendary wrestling family, is the easy choice.
Natties longevity is incredible; no woman has ever been an active member of the roster as long as she has. She is still regularly putting on good matches with new talent in NXT, showing that she can work with anyone because she is simply a talented performer. When the bell rings, Natalya is in her element. If you want to build a mid-card division, something WWE doesn't currently have for women, you need two things. It would be best if you had a credible champion and good challengers. Natalya helps you guarantee both. As champion, she'd bring a legacy that still resonates, and she will help make her challengers look good while doing it.
It could be hard to find more than three candidates for WWE's mid-card titles.
If the key to building a division is genuinely a credible champion and good challengers, then WWE is halfway there. There are a number of talented women who can hold a title in WWE. What is lacking is critical part two. That isn't to say that there aren't some challengers. All of the women who could hold a new title could also challenge for it. In the women's division, though, there is still a vast gulf in fan support between the top third and the bottom thirds of the roster. Plus, WWE already struggles with booking their mid-card talent, trapping most of them as tag team challengers. All of them are committed to something at this point, which will make for slim pickings in the new division. WWE needs more women on the roster and more of the women to truly feel like they are in the middle to run with two more mid-card belts. The in-ring talent is there, and with even more coming in, WWE just needs to commit time. When they finally do, the three names can get them started and really get to show out.
