With the No. 1 Contender’s match set for next week on Smackdown Live, AJ Styles needs to win the match and headline WrestleMania 33.

We are on the road to WrestleMania and we are inching closer and closer to the big event in Orlando. While we are now starting to see the development of what the potential matchups will be, the main event of SmackDown Live remains up in the air. It will feature Bray Wyatt going against either AJ Styles or Luke Harper.

Originally it was speculated that when Randy Orton won the Royal Rumble he would main event the Show of Shows for the WWE Championship. However, those plans changed when his ally Bray Wyatt won the title inside the Elimination Chamber.

The following week on SmackDown, The Viper announced that he would forfeit his championship opportunity vowing now to battle The Eater of Worlds. With Wyatt not having an opponent for the biggest event of the year, Daniel Bryan announced a 10 man Battle Royal would determine the new No. 1 contender.

The match got down to former Wyatt Family member, Luke Harper and The Phenomenal One, AJ Styles. The match would end in a draw when both men fell to the floor and the exact same time. Daniel Bryan then announced that Harper and Styles would face each other one-on-one next week on SmackDown Live with the winner earning the Championship match.

With everything that has been going on between Harper, Wyatt, and Orton, the main belief is that Luke Harper will win the match next week. However, with everything he has accomplished this year, AJ Styles should be the one to earn the championship match.

More from WrestleMania

For the last year Styles has shown that he is by far the top talent in all of the WWE. He has put on great matches with the likes of Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, and John Cena. The Phenomenal One was taken second by SmackDown Live, showing that WWE had big things for him.

That we become true when Styles won the WWE Championship in September, he would the championship for about four months before dropping it to Cena at the Royal Rumble. During his time on the Blue Brand, The Phenomenal One has shown that he is the top star on the brand.

Rumors have circulated from the Wrestling Observer that Styles might be potentially facing SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon at the big event, but that would simply be a waste. Also if WWE doesn’t have a Draft Lottery later this year, how could WWE keep Styles on a show where he battled his boss in the ring?

The smart should be to have Styles square off against Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania. The two showed the potential they could have in a match when they were the final two in the Elimination Chamber match a few weeks ago.

It would be interesting to see the two feud for the next few weeks as, WWE could add Orton back into the match in a way to help Wyatt retain the title, stacking the deck against AJ in the process.

Smackdown Live has been the better show since the brand extension thanks to AJ Styles and he should be rewarded with a main event title match at WrestleMania. While a triple threat against Orton, Wyatt, and Harper could be interesting, with all he’s done this past year Styles should head to Orlando with a chance to reclaim his WWE Championship.
