Carmella has improved immensely since her last WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship run in 2017. It is about time for reign number two before year 2020 is over.

Let’s wind the clocks back to 2018. Matter fact, let’s wind the clocks back exactly to SummerSlam of that year where Carmella lost her SmackDown Women’s Championship. Four months into her reign, The Princess of Staten Island received several criticisms of her reign, mostly those suggesting her in-ring skills did not meet the standards of her main event position.

Momentarily, both at SummerSlam and during her title rematch on the following SmackDown, Carmella was phased out of title picture completely and went back to the undercard soon after. However, during that SmackDown match with Charlotte Flair, she suddenly started receiving some acclaim.

For all of the backlash she went through during her title reign and even beforehand, Mella received high praise from critics and fans alike, surprised by her breakout in-ring performance wrestling Charlotte Flair that night.

The praise only increased in the coming months as she formed an alliance with R-Truth, constantly updated her moveset with exciting moves and had entertaining matches with game competition like Sasha Banks, Bayley and Naomi.

It was almost as if she improved overnight. What happened?

One of three things: One could be she quite literally and magically woke up one day and was suddenly one of the best competitors on the roster. Two could be that she just improved gradually over time. Or three, she was great all along.

As a heel, she worked to get people to boo and hate her, but as a babyface, she has more leeway to pull out exciting performances that wow the crowd.

Whatever it was, between the constant in-ring improvement and how she’s steadily built a fanbase overtime, it may be time for her to finally get a second reign with a Women’s Championship, preferably this year.

All of the things that her first reign suffered from – specifically, a lack of fan support and a critical eye on her in-ring performances – seem to have been erased with time. A new reign is destined to be better received than than her last, and most importantly, it’s destined to be F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S.

It’s unlikely to happen soon, after recently failing to capture Bayley’s title and then failing to beat Naomi in a number one contender’s match. However, she has enough momentum to warrant another title reign. Whether it happens on Raw or SmackDown, it needs to happen before 2020 is over.
